The 4th of July: It’s a Hit!
Loree’s note: I am excited to introduce my colleague and friend, Gina Nucci, as our blog contributor this week. Gina is the director of corporate marketing here at Mann’s and is also a shareholder in the company. She’s active in so many industry and local organizations, serving on the foodservice division board of PMA, serving on the board of director’s for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County, and volunteering for the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Campaign to name a few. For this post, she’s highlighting the whimsical aspects of America’s favorite past time– it’s a home run!
Baseball. It’s the classic American past time, and as we head into the 4th of July holiday – celebrating America’s birthday with BBQ’s, watermelon and fireworks – we wanted to share just how much everyone at Mann’s LOVES baseball.
For starters, we sponsor a lot of baseball and softball teams (not to mention soccer, lacrosse, football and even hockey). Recently Kent and Derek Derdivanis sent us an old photo from the 1960’s of the two of them posing in their Mann Packing sponsored baseball uniforms.
And of course, my brother played baseball throughout the 1970’s. And then there I was – leading the charge on the original Mann Packing sponsored Toro Angels – ’84-’87. Following in our footsteps was my sister DeeDee, coaching my niece, Jessica, for the Toro Angels in 2014.
Growing up in the business, my father’s office wall was covered with rows and rows of pictures of baseball and softball teams we sponsored. He coached all of mine and many of my brothers. He even continued to coach softball teams after I had grown and went away to college.
Our CEO, Lorri Koster, and her husband, Tommy, sponsor Coastal Grower Bulls summer league baseball. Mann’s even has its own coed softball team – the Broccolini® Bombers – playing in the Monterey rec league. I proudly play first base.
Our connection to baseball is what makes this time of year even more special. This past week we supported and sponsored the Junior Giants program in Salinas. The Junior Giants, in partnership with the Salinas Police Athletics League (PAL) manage the program locally. On Saturday, over 1,000 kids and parents came out for Opening Day and we passed out over 600 baseball gloves…from T-ball to seniors. Along with Snap Mann and the San Jose Giants mascot, Gigante!
Entering its 24th year, Junior Giants is a free, noncompetitive, coed baseball program. Over 25,000 youth across California, Nevada and Oregon participate annually. The program offers equipment, uniforms, program incentives and training for coaches.
The eight week program centers on getting kids to continue to read throughout summer and build character in the process. Junior Giants wants to help you lead, succeed and have fun!
Their motto is “Anyone can play!”
We hope you make time to play over the holiday weekend. At the ball park, in the yard, at the beach. I think that’s something we all can get behind. One mitt at a time.
Let’s play ball!
